Job Overview
This role serves as the enterprise owner of Total Rewards strategy for Mercedes‑Benz USA. The position is accountable for defining, governing, and continuously evolving compensation and benefits strategies that enable business performance, ensure regulatory compliance, and reinforce MBUSA’s position as an employer of choice.
The role provides strategic leadership and functional governance across Compensation, Health & Welfare, Retirement, and Wellness programs, delivering shared services to seven U.S. Mercedes‑Benz entities. The role leads a multi‑disciplinary team and partners closely with Executive Management, global and regional committees, Finance, Legal, and external vendors.
Decisions made in this role have material financial, regulatory, and employee‑experience impact across the U.S. market.
Responsibilities
Key Accountabilities
Strategy & Enterprise Leadership
- Define and own short‑ and long‑term Total Rewards strategy, ensuring alignment with MBUSA business objectives, workforce strategy, and Mercedes‑Benz Group principles.
- Act as the enterprise subject‑matter authority for compensation and benefits, influencing senior leadership decisions and shaping policy direction at the U.S. and regional level.
- Evaluate external market trends, regulatory changes, and internal business needs to proactively evolve Total Rewards programs.
Compensation Governance
- Establish and govern enterprise‑wide compensation frameworks, including base pay, incentive programs, merit and bonus processes, job evaluation architecture, market benchmarking, salary structures, executive compensation elements, and proprietary long‑term incentive programs (e.g., phantom share plans).
- Ensure compensation programs drive performance, equity, transparency, and retention while remaining market‑competitive and financially sustainable.
- Own executive‑ and employee‑facing communications related to compensation philosophy, design, and outcomes.
Benefits Strategy & Oversight
- Design and govern all Health & Welfare, Retirement, and Wellness programs for MBUSA and six additional U.S. affiliates.
- Lead benefit strategy development and present recommendations, risk assessments, and plan changes to Executive Management and local/global governance committees.
- Ensure programs are competitive, cost‑effective, compliant, and aligned with workforce and business priorities.
- Collaborate with North American and global partners to optimize shared services and leverage scale.
Financial & Vendor Stewardship
- Own and manage the enterprise compensation and benefits budget exceeding $200M, including forecasting, cost controls, and executive reporting.
- Select, oversee, and hold accountable strategic vendor partners; lead contract negotiations and renewals to ensure service quality, innovation, compliance, and cost efficiency.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Serve as the accountable leader for compliance with all applicable federal, state, and regulatory requirements (IRS, DOL, ERISA, and state laws), as well as MBUSA and Mercedes‑Benz Group governance standards.
- Partner with Legal on Benefits Committee governance, fiduciary matters, plan design decisions, and regulatory risk mitigation.
- Ensure policies, procedures, and systems are audit‑ready and consistently applied across entities.
Leadership & Stakeholder Influence
- Lead, develop, and mentor a high‑performing Total Rewards team, setting clear expectations and building functional depth and succession.
- Build trusted partnerships with Executive Management, Finance, Legal, HR leadership, U.S. affiliates, and global stakeholders to drive alignment and execution.
- Represent Total Rewards in senior‑level forums, influencing outcomes that impact the broader organization.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Business Management, or related field
- 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in Total Rewards, Compensation, and/or Benefits with enterprise‑level scope
- Demonstrated experience influencing executive stakeholders and governing complex, multi‑entity programs
- Deep expertise in U.S. compensation methodologies and benefits plan design, administration, and compliance
Preferred
- Finance or Accounting experience
- CEBS or equivalent advanced certification
- Experience supporting or partnering with automotive retail organizations
- Experience operating within a matrixed, global organization
Knowledge, Skills & Capabilities
- Strong financial acumen with demonstrated experience managing large‑scale budgets
- Recognized expertise in incentive design, salary structures, market pricing, job evaluation, merit planning, salary budgeting, and executive compensation
- Comprehensive understanding of Medical, Dental, Retirement, Pension, Life, AD&D, Short‑ and Long‑Term Disability, and Workers’ Compensation programs
- Proven ability to translate complex regulatory and technical topics into clear executive and employee communications
- Advanced stakeholder management, leadership presence, and decision‑making skills
- High proficiency with HRIS and Total Rewards technology platforms
