Technician (Laboratory)
Tasks

Responsible for supporting the Mercedes-Benz East London plant with chemical analysis and monitoring of critical materials and plant processes (e.g. pretreatment, e-coat) to ensure strict adherence to quality standards. The incumbent will also provide technical support for investigations and problem-solving. Calibration/verification of analytical equipment and adherence to S.H.E.Q. standards will form part of the scope of work of the technician.

The Job Requirements

  • Experience with various analytical techniques - e.g. Karl Fischer titration, scanning electron microscope, FTIR spectrophotometer,  and titrations.

  • Analytical and conceptual thinking.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and report-writing skills.

  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite.

  • Ability to perform the minimum required physical and mental requirements of the function.

  • People’s Principles as per LEAD.

Outputs

  • Responsible for analysis, monitoring and evaluation of materials, critical facility equipment and processes to ensure strict adherence to Mercedes-Benz quality standards.

  • Use analytical techniques and chemical knowledge to assist with investigations and problem solving.

  • Conducts material evaluation as per the ISIR process.

  • Conducts calibration/verification of equipment.

  •  Ensures adherence to SHEQ standards.

  • Responsible for self-development.

  • Ensures departmental operational plans are met, e.g. deadlines

  • Performs delegated S.H.E.Q tasks and duties & informs superior about deviations.

  • Ensure compliance with the Company's Integrity & Anti Bribery Codes, Conflict of Interest Policy & S.H.E.Q requirements.

Qualifications
  • Minimum NQF 7 - Degree in Chemistry or relevant equivalent

Knowledge and Experience

  • 3 years’ experience working in a chemical laboratory

  • Experience with automotive coatings, metal pretreatment and e-coat processes would be advantageous.

  • At least 6 months participation in our Graduate Development Programme
